Miss Berry’s 6th grade general music classes recently
designed a musical instrument as an individual class project.
The students each made a musical instrument out of recycled
materials and were asked to provide a presentation to their
fellow classmates, along with how the musical tone was produced.
The students gave their instruments strange names such as
the “flum”, “chicabanana”, and the
“hip maracas”. Miss Berry stated that the students
spent a great deal of time making sure that their instruments
worked and practicing songs to perform for the class.
Middle School honored the 2007 Student Teachers with a surprise
party this past week. Jenny June, was the student teacher
for Mrs. Brenda Bays (Mathematics) and Miss Holly Taylor
(Language/Literature) was the student teacher for Rick Powell.
High School PRIDE Team preformed at Northwest Middle School
on May the 10th. The PRIDE Team is an organization of students
that have pledged to remain drug and alcohol free. They
present their message through skits, dance, song, and gymnastics.
Members urge students not to allow peer pressure to influence
them in life.
PRIDE Team advisors are Mrs. Judy Smith Bays and Ms. Kathy
Local School District Nurse, Mary Stiverson, recently held
a defibrillator-training seminar at the Middle School. Representatives
from the Elementary, Middle and High School were trained
in the use of CPR and a Defibrillator. Each building will
have its own Defibrillator unit, which required staff to
be trained for its use.
April 26th, NHS held its annual Spring Band Concert. It
featured the high school concert and jazz bands, and the
middle school band. Click here

Spring Book Fair
NMS Library Spring 2007 Scholastic Book Fair was held April
3 -13th in the middle school library during regular school
hours. As a reward for reaching their goal, NMS students
got to watch Principal Tipton kiss a goat! Click here for

Staff Attended Workshop
Northwest Middle School Staff attended
a two-day workshop in Columbus, Ohio on differentiated assessment
and grading. Rick Wormeli, guest speaker and author of “Fair
Isn’t Always Equal,” shared engaging and practical
approaches to assessments at both the middle and high school
levels. The seminar provided instructors with proven assessment
techniques that teachers may use in all disciplines. Northwest
Middle School teachers that attended the seminar were Keith
Throckmorton, Brooks Fry, Jackie Murphy, Debbie Spears,
Connie Altman, and Principal Greg Tipton.
WSAZ Visits NMS

NMS Band filming a segment called "Do My Job."

Middle School held a surprise retirement party for Custodian

Middle School’s yearbook staff recently held a Cornhole
Tournament for both students and staff. Each team had to pay
and entry fee of $5.00 fee to participate. The purpose of the
event was to help defer some of the expenses in publishing the
2006-2007 yearbooks. Each grade level had winners:
6th grade winners were Cory Burnsworth and Wyatt Bazler 7th
grade winners were Zach Wooten and Austin Jenkins 8th grade
were Kayla White and Billy Hodge Overall Winners were Kayla
White and Billy Hodge.
Woodsman of the Year
The famous Bob the Juggler came and gave
a visit to Northwest Elementary and Middle School, to give a
few words about self esteem.
Brass Quintet Performs
April 27th at Northwest Middle School The Ohio University Brass
Quintet performed for the students at Northwest Middle School
on Friday, April 27th. The ensemble is comprised of Ohio University
and one graduate student. The Quintet performs all over South
Central Ohio. They played various types of music such as, Washington
Post March by John Phillip Sousa, It Don’t Mean a Thing
by Duke Ellington, and The Rejoicing by G.F. Handel. The quintet
consists of John Schlabach and B.J. Britt on trumpets, C. Scott
Smith on horn,
Chris Hayes on Trombone, and Jason Smith on Tuba. The quintet
was invited to play for the students at the request of Band
Directors, Christy Berry and Nicholas Basham.

middle school teachers played the 8th grade boys and girls basketball
teams in a basketball game on April 13th. The teachers won handily
by a score of 103-54. Nice job by the students and maybe next
year it will be a different ballgame.
Candy Guessing Game
Jessica Newton was the winner of the Candy Guessing Game.
The Language Arts Department recently completed a unit on Lois
Lowry’s book, “The Giver.” Eighth grade instructors,
Mrs. Debbie Spears and Mr. Rick Powell, required students to
design a diorama and present an oral report on their own personal
memories. They were supposed to illustrate both good and bad
memories that they may have experienced in their lives. When
presenting their oral report, students were to refer to their
dioramas, which contained pictures or objects that they had
used to illustrate a memory. This correlated with the novel,
Student Music Projects
Northwest Middle School’s vocal instructor, Mr. Patrick
Colegrove, recently assigned the 8th grade music classes with
the making of a “Legend’s Box.” Students were
asked to select a music hero or legend and create a diorama
on that particular person. Students could provide a picture
of the musician, names of their famous songs or work, recordings
of music or other pertinent information that they gathered about
that particular person.
National PI Day
